Mixing metaphors

It's Friday afternoon and I am writing a story about a golf day hosted by a very well-known county cricket club. I am a bit tee'd off with trying to avoid mixing my metaphors - such a sticky wicket - but I'll bat on and hope I reach the last hole before failing light. Oh, and I forgot to mention that there's a footballing legend involved so that's making it a beautiful game of three opportunities to make readers as sick as a parrot.

I could go on...and on... and on...

Perhaps I should stick to horses - surely less opportunity there. Hold your horses, they are probably neck and neck to get first past the post.
